Asbestos abatement is the safe removal, repair, or containment of asbestos-containing materials from a building. It's done to eliminate the health risks posed by exposure to airborne asbestos fibers.
The only way to confirm asbestos is through laboratory testing. If your home or building was constructed before the 1980s, certain materials such as floor tile, pipe insulation, popcorn ceilings, siding, roofing, and mastic may contain asbestos.
Asbestos is generally safest when left undisturbed. However, if materials are damaged, deteriorating, or will be disturbed during renovations or demolition, fibers can become airborne and should be handled by a licensed asbestos contractor.
Every project is different. Smaller residential projects are often completed in one day, while larger commercial projects may take several days depending on the scope.
The process starts with an inspection and testing to confirm asbestos is present, followed by sealing off the work area to prevent fiber release. Trained crews then safely remove or encapsulate the affected material, dispose of it according to regulations, and run a final air quality check to confirm the space is safe before it's reopened.
